Date and Time: 6:00 PM, June 9, 2020
Present: Board President Brian Duncan, Barb Foster, Justin Harmeson
Location: Attica City Building Courtroom
President Duncan called the meeting to order at 6:01 PM.
The first item of discussion was moving the regular monthly public meeting from the second Tuesday of the month to the fourth Tuesday of the month, staying with a 6 PM start time. This would allow the board to have better access to the city council meetings, in case something pertinent and time sensitive needs to be voted on. Justin motioned to move the regular public meetings to the fourth Tuesday of the month at 6 PM. Barb seconded the motion.
Brian’s meeting with Mayor Roderick clarified several items that the board had questions about. One, that the city council approved the pay raise for the park counselors to $12 an hour and a pay raise for the assistant park program director to $15 an hour. Another item was finding a potential grant writer to aid in finding funding for the pool. Mayor Roderick said that Kristy Jerrell would be willing to sit down and have a conversation with the board to potentially help on the project. She actually already looked a little into funding sources and said that the DNR grant is a 50/50 match, but that labor and materials can count towards the match so we would not need to have 50% of the funds up front. She also said other things in our favor include that the city owns the land, the parks board would be a first time applicant, the pool can be tied into the trail system that runs through the park, and the pool would be a support facility. Another idea to potentially pursue would be the Indiana bond bank, which has bonds specifically for the construction of pools.
Leslie coatings will start on resurfacing the pickleball/tennis courts at Mcdonald Park hopefully on Friday June 12th, but the latest would be Monday June 15th.
Karley DeSutter let the board know that all park counselors have started their hiring packets and will be turned in this week.
Barb let the rest of the board know that the expression swing is in progress and Joanne Broadwater has the information she needs to get the swings ordered. Also, Eric Swank is in the works of building the bridges for Ravine Park.
There was no public comment.
New items that were discussed included signage for the trail system to connect the parks more cohesively. Justin will be looking into developing a sign that can be placed at various key intersections along the trail. The board also discussed the possibility of having a 5k/walk around the park, potentially in September to highlight the beauty of Attica’s trails. Further discussion and planning will need to be had to have this event.
Brian motioned to adjourn the meeting at 6:47 PM. Barb seconded.
The next park board meeting will be at June 23rd at 6 PM in the city building courtroom.
