Board of Works & Safety – October 18, 2017

The Board of Works and Safety for the City of Attica met, pursuant to Public Notice, on Wednesday, October 18, 2017, 4:30 P.M. in the City Council Room.

Roll Call

Present was Mayor Duane Roderick and Board Members Chris Gayler and Andy Smart. Also present was City Attorney, Thomas P. O’Connor.

Upon Motion duly made, seconded and adopted, minutes from the previous Board of Works Meeting were approved as written.

Citizens’ Petitions

There were no citizens Petitions to be presented to the Board.

Department Head Reports

Ron Jean, Street and Water Supervisor, stated that leaf pick up would start around the 1st of November.

Police Chief Bob Cole reported that he had applied for a JAG grant in the amount of $36,000.00 to be used toward the purchase of mobile radios. He also stated that awards for the COP grants would be announced by the end of this month.

Fire Chief, Ed O’Farrell, reported that his Department, to month’s date had made 9 runs and to year date, 198 runs. He did say 70% of those runs were EMT related with fire runs being down for the year. He brought before the Board a need to inspect buildings in the downtown district so as to be able to safely respond to any fires in the future.

Jeff Pycke, Building Commissioner, reported that he has issued to 2 permits for decks. He has send a letter regarding the deteriorating structure at 407 S. Brady. He had inspected 102 ½ N. Perry and did not find any structural issues. A general discussion was had as to the Attica Hotel and the structure behind Circle H building.

Unfinished Business

In unfinished business, Jeff Beineman appeared and reported the following time line as to the repairs for 201 S. Perry: the roof will be sealed by the end of this week, the window replacement will start this week, the exterior walls will be power washed to remove loose paint and the brick walls will be tuck pointed by the end of the year. Because of the need to place equipment for the repairs on the sidewalks, he was advised to notify the Clerk’s Office when he would be blocking the sidewalks.

New Business

In new business, the utility credits, as presented, were approved.

Upon Motion duly made and carried, the claims, as presented, were approved.


There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:00 P.M. and the next Board of Works meeting will be held on Novembers 7, 2017 at 4:30 pm.
